Perhaps one of the finest Bond movies, The Spy Who Loved Me gained attention for its underwater scene. Yet without the Lotus Esprit S1 and the people behind the modifications, none of it would have been feasible. The Lotus Esprit S1 makes its maiden appearance during a mountaintop pursuit into Sardiania that concludes with a pier leap into the water.
The submarine was built with Perry Oceanographic's assistance at the request of the movie makers. Perry equipped the retractable rear tray of the Esprit with four electric submersible drive units, each with steering vanes in the propeller stream.
Wet Nellie was sold to its unaware owners for about $100 after spending ten years in a storage facility in Long Island, New York. The storage container's winning bidders were not permitted to inspect its contents, but by a happy coincidence, the new owners discovered Wet Nellie parked inside the locker.
